Invisalign Q&A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a modern system for orthodontics, the process of straightening your teeth. While traditional braces were once the only option to achieve perfect alignment, Invisalign offers an alternative with fewer complications. The system consists of customized, clear plastic aligner devices that you wear over your teeth for most of the day and while you sleep.

At the beginning of the Invisalign process, you schedule a consultation with an orthodontist to see if you’re a good candidate. Then they take digital impressions of your teeth in their current state of misalignment. These impressions are used to make a digital treatment plan showing all the steps of your teeth’s movement into a straighter position.

You then receive your customized system of plastic aligners. Each aligner in the series gently pushes your teeth a little further toward their new, straight position. You must wear your aligners for 20-22 hours each day and progress to the next aligner every 1-2 weeks, as dictated by your dentist.

How long does my Invisalign treatment take?

Just like with braces, the length of your Invisalign treatment depends on the position of your teeth when you start, but Invisalign boasts being able to straight teeth up to two times faster than traditional braces. After evaluating your digital impressions and mapping out your treatment plan, your dentist can tell you how long you can expect your treatment to take and how many aligners it includes.

Generally, treatment with Invisalign takes between 12 and 18 months. You’ll start seeing improvements in the way your teeth look just weeks into your treatment because the aligners are invisible and removable.

How do I care for my Invisalign devices?

You must keep your Invisalign aligners clean throughout treatment to prevent oral health complications. You can clean them easily by brushing them with your toothbrush and toothpaste. For optimal results, you must:

  • Brush your aligners after every snack and meal
  • Brush gently
  • Clean your teeth while your aligner is out
  • Use lukewarm water
  • Avoid using hot water
  • Only drink water while wearing your aligners
  • Remove your aligners while eating

If you lose or break an aligner, call D3 Dental right away. Your orthodontist may allow you to progress to the next aligner or tell you to wear a previous set while he orders a replacement.
